Singapore’s fourth-generation (4G) leadership team has shown their resilience and capability in navigating the country through the Covid-19 crisis, said President Halimah Yacob on Monday (April 10). In her address at the opening of the second session of the 14th Parliament, she noted how well the team has worked together and engaged citizens through initiatives like Forward Singapore.

However, President Halimah emphasized that the 4G leaders must continue to work closely with Singaporeans to chart the next chapter of the “Singapore Story.” Her remarks contrast with her 2018 opening address, where she stated that the 4G team needed to “earn the right to lead” by growing with the people and embracing diverse views.

Stronger and More United After the Pandemic

Halimah highlighted that Singapore has emerged from the pandemic “stronger and more united” and that the crisis demonstrated the nation’s strength when everyone comes together. She warned that while trust in the government has been strengthened, many societies have been torn apart by deep divides.

In such cases, she noted, political parties exploit divisions, causing political gridlock and a loss of trust in institutions—a scenario that “cannot happen in Singapore.” While recognizing that differing views are natural in an open society, Halimah urged that conversations must remain respectful, constructive, and rooted in facts.

Key Government Priorities

The president outlined four key priorities for the government moving forward: expanding opportunities for every citizen, strengthening social safety nets, building a smart and livable city, and deepening Singaporeans’ sense of shared identity and responsibility.

In closing, President Halimah encouraged Singaporeans to reflect on the values of the founding generation, particularly as the nation commemorates the centenary of Lee Kuan Yew’s birth. She urged everyone to uphold shared values while having the courage to break new ground, ensuring Singapore’s continued progress with confidence and clarity.
