SINGAPORE – Covering an impressive 1,000 kilometers in just 12 days, ultramarathoner Natalie Dau, 52, has set a new Singapore record for the “Fastest 1,000km Thailand-Singapore Ultramarathon.” Starting in Hat Yai, Thailand, on May 25, and crossing the finish line at The Westin Singapore on June 5, Dau’s journey was a remarkable feat of endurance and determination. Along the way, she faced intense heat, injury, and lack of sleep but persevered to raise over $50,000 for the global charity GRLS, which supports women and girls in sports.
Through Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, Dau ran an average of two full marathons each day. Battling 35°C temperatures that melted her shoes and a hip injury on day one, she pushed forward, determined not to disappoint those who supported her. “Quitting wasn’t an option,” she told The Straits Times, sharing that the encouragement from friends, family, and other runners who joined her along the route gave her a crucial boost.
Accompanied by a dedicated support team, including coach Arthur Tong, Dau navigated roads often lined with trucks and rough terrain. Tong cycled alongside her when their van couldn’t access certain routes, helping manage her pace and providing moral support. “We kept her mind engaged with conversation, which really helped,” he said.
The journey was not without its physical toll; Dau dealt with a urinary tract infection and took precautions to avoid blisters and chafing. With the assistance of her crew, she stayed resilient through each day’s challenges, finishing to the cheers of over 100 supporters.
Among the well-wishers was her 15-year-old daughter, Lilliana, who joined her mother for parts of the run. “It was a huge commitment, and I’m grateful she understood why I needed to do it,” Dau shared. After completing what equates to 24 marathons, she plans to take a well-deserved rest before heading to the Sydney Marathon later this year.
