A tragic accident took place in Jurong West on Thursday, Dec 7, when a 69-year-old man on a personal mobility aid (PMA) collided with a motorcycle, leading to his death. The incident occurred around 8:35 pm along Jurong West Avenue 1 near Corporation Road, as reported by Shin Min Daily News.

An eyewitness, Mr. Xie, passing by the scene, described the aftermath, with the elderly man lying on the ground and his PMA in pieces nearby. “It seemed he was trying to cross the road on his PMA when he collided with the motorcyclist,” said Xie, adding that parts of the PMA, including the seat and tires, had broken off from the impact.

The 27-year-old motorcyclist involved was also thrown onto the road, sustaining injuries to his legs and neck. Witnesses noted his groans of pain as nearby pedestrians directed traffic to prevent further accidents. A video captured three paramedics administering first aid and performing CPR on the elderly man.

Shin Min reporters arriving at the scene observed that police were gathering evidence. The PMA was severely damaged, with various parts scattered across the road. A nearby group of motorcyclists, friends of the injured rider, awaited updates after his wife informed them of the accident.

In response to AsiaOne’s queries, the police confirmed that the elderly PMA rider was taken to the hospital unconscious, where he later passed away, while the motorcyclist was taken to the hospital conscious.

The Land Transport Authority stipulates that PMAs are permitted on footpaths and cycling paths only; riding them on roads is prohibited. Police investigations into the accident are ongoing.
