Singaporean actress Elaine Wong has spent the last 13 years building her entertainment career in South Korea, recently gaining overnight fame after her participation in Netflix’s survival series Physical: 100.

Speaking to Mothership, Wong described the experience as “overwhelming,” as she woke up to an influx of Instagram direct messages and media requests from both Korean and Singaporean outlets. “None of us expected such a reaction because I had such a small part in the show,” she said with a laugh.

Despite being eliminated in the first challenge on Physical: 100, Wong’s unexpected rise to fame has garnered her a lot of attention. However, with her low profile throughout her career, some misinformation about her has surfaced online.

Wong clarified that while some reports claim she was part of the former K-pop girl group SKarf, she trained with the company but never debuted. Additionally, she addressed confusion about her age, confirming that she’s 34 and not in her mid-20s or 40s, as some sources have speculated.

In the 13 years she has lived in South Korea, Wong has worn her Singaporean identity like a badge of honor. She often introduces herself as “Elaine from Singapore” in the shows she’s been part of, expressing pride in her roots. “I feel a sense of pride when people say they’ve heard of Singapore. If they don’t know where it is, I’m always happy to tell them more about my home,” she said.

Wong also enjoys encountering fellow Singaporeans in Seoul, offering help when they struggle with the language barrier. “Hearing Singlish reminds me of home, and I love connecting with Singaporeans when I meet them abroad,” she shared.

Through her journey, Wong remains connected to Singapore and proudly represents her homeland in the South Korean entertainment industry.
