The Istana, Singapore’s historic presidential residence, is set to undergo “major restoration works” beginning in early 2024, according to the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) during its Committee of Supply debate on March 6, 2023.
These restoration efforts aim to address the building’s deterioration due to age and environmental factors, while also modernizing its mechanical and electrical systems. The restoration is part of broader efforts to preserve Singapore’s national monuments for future generations.
The Istana, built between 1867 and 1869, serves as both a government working space and a venue for state events and community gatherings.
Open Houses for Public: The Istana opens its doors to the public five times a year on key public holidays like Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Labour Day, National Day, and Deepavali. Visitors can enjoy tours, student musical performances, workshops, and the lush garden grounds, bringing picnic mats to relax and enjoy the surroundings. While these activities were paused during the Covid-19 pandemic, they are set to resume once the restoration work is completed.
