The Singapore Turf Club (STC) in Kranji is set to close by March 2027, with its last race meeting scheduled for October 5, 2024, featuring the 100th Grand Singapore Gold Cup. This decision was announced on June 5, 2023, during a joint press conference by STC chairman Niam Chiang Meng, Singapore Tote Board chief executive Fong Yong Kiang, Urban Redevelopment Authority senior director Tan See Nin, and Second Minister for Finance and National Development Indranee Rajah.

The STC, Singapore’s only horse racing club founded in 1842, will hand over its 120 hectares of land to the government for redevelopment. The Ministry of Finance (MOF) and Ministry of National Development (MND) cited declining spectatorship in local horse racing as a key factor in the closure, noting that in-person attendance at the racecourse has decreased over the past decade.

The government plans to utilize the site for public housing, leisure, and recreational purposes, aligning with broader development plans for Singapore’s northern region, which include enhancing Woodlands Town and master-planning Lim Chu Kang as a high-tech agri-food cluster.

Indranee explained that the Kranji site offers a rare opportunity for large-scale housing development in Singapore. However, specific details on the number of public housing units to be built on the site have yet to be disclosed. Niam expressed sadness over the club’s closure but acknowledged the importance of optimizing land use to meet the needs of Singaporeans.

MND will provide further updates on the redevelopment plans following necessary assessments and studies.
