SINGAPORE — After purchasing her five-room HDB flat in Sengkang Crescent for $650,000, 48-year-old Weng Xueli (transliteration) has spent an additional $100,000 trying to resolve water seepage issues that surfaced shortly after she moved in. Despite her extensive efforts, the problem remains unresolved.
Weng shared with Shin Min Daily News that, upon moving in May 2022, she quickly noticed moisture in her bedroom wardrobe and felt dampness in her clothes, though no visible leaks were apparent. Frequent mould growth and high moisture levels led her to replace kitchen cabinetry, the TV console, and bathroom fixtures, costing her $50,000 initially. But conditions worsened, with water seeping from the ceiling and walls and unidentified insects appearing in the flat.
In July 2023, she invested an additional $100,000 in renovations, tiling walls, applying waterproof paint, rebuilding a demolished wall, and adding new fixtures. Yet, when heavy rains hit, water continued to leak into her bedrooms, living room, and bathrooms, even soaking her bed at times. The water has a milky or rusty appearance and requires constant cleanup.
While Weng has approached authorities for help, the cause remains unidentified. Another resident on the 16th floor reported similar issues with wall cracks and peeling paint. Despite the challenges, Weng is reluctant to move, as she values the flat’s location. “I thought the renovations would fix it, but I didn’t expect it to be like this,” she lamented.
