SINGAPORE: Eugene Wijeysingha, the esteemed former headmaster of Raffles Institution (RI) who led the school from 1986 to 1994, has passed away at the age of 90. Raffles Institution shared the news on social media on Saturday evening (March 2), describing Mr. Wijeysingha, affectionately known as “Mr. Wijey,” as a visionary who left a lasting impact on the school and the broader Singaporean educational landscape.
On Monday morning (March 4), the RI Year 1 to 4 campus held a tribute, observing a minute of silence and lowering the flags to half-mast. Principal Mr. Loh shared remarks on Mr. Wijeysingha’s legacy, inspiring students and faculty to carry forward his contributions to RI.
Mr. Wijeysingha began his journey as a history teacher at RI’s Bras Basah campus in 1959, eventually taking on the role of Senior Master before being appointed as Headmaster in 1986. During his tenure, he championed discipline, academic rigor, and a strong school spirit. He guided RI’s transition to an independent institution and oversaw its relocation to the Bishan campus in 1990, as well as the establishment of RI Boarding in 1994.
In addition to his leadership, Mr. Wijeysingha authored The Eagle Breeds a Gryphon, a book chronicling RI’s history from 1823 to 2003. He further cemented his dedication to preserving RI’s legacy by founding the Raffles Archives and Museum upon his retirement in 1994.
Tributes from Singaporeans continue to pour in, celebrating his profound influence on education. US-based educator Mazlina Bachman praised him for positively impacting educational policy and society, while a former RI student posted: “Thank you for showing that a teacher and leader can be firm yet kind.” Dr. Bernard Thong, Chairman of the College Advisory Committee at Temasek Junior College, reflected on Mr. Wijeysingha’s role as a mentor, saying, “Many of us who are now leaders in our own fields have much to thank him for.”
Mr. Wijeysingha’s legacy lives on in the countless students and educators he inspired. He will be remembered fondly for his commitment, compassion, and indelible influence on generations of Singaporeans.
