SINGAPORE: A marketing and administrative professional in his mid-30s recently sought advice online, asking, “Is it okay to quit without a job in line?” The employee, who has spent three years with his current company, described feeling drained by “toxic bosses and an overall unhappy environment.”

Posting anonymously on the NUSWhispers Facebook page, he shared that despite actively applying elsewhere, he’s had no luck with interviews and wonders if his desired pay is a factor or if the job market is simply challenging right now. On a positive note, he mentioned he is single, financially stable, and has no dependents.

Supportive comments flooded in, with some encouraging him to prioritize his mental health. One commenter shared, “I quit without a backup job, and although I’m still looking, my mental health has improved. If you’re financially secure, take the break and recharge.” Others advised him to stay resilient in his search before quitting, noting that a longer job search could drain his savings.

Another commenter advised, “It’s usually better to find a job first. Make sure you have at least 6 to 12 months’ savings if you decide to quit.” The overall sentiment remained mixed, with some saying a change in environment might be equally challenging given current economic pressures.
