SINGAPORE — Prospective homeowners will soon have a new flat option in Singapore’s Housing Board (HDB) estates: “white flats” with no partitions or beams, creating an open-concept living space. This pilot scheme, set to launch in the Kallang-Whampoa Build-To-Order (BTO) project in October, allows buyers to customize their living areas entirely, said National Development Minister Desmond Lee on May 27.
These flexible flats, comprising 80 three-room and 230 four-room units, will be located near Lavender MRT station and give owners a blank canvas to tailor spaces to their lifestyle needs. The open layout might appeal to families with young children, providing space for play without structural modifications. As families grow, they can add partitions to create bedrooms or redefine living areas.
Minister Lee noted that young Singaporeans had expressed a desire for more adaptable spaces during the Forward Singapore discussions. “We took this idea back and worked with our architects and engineers,” he said. For those preferring a standard layout, HDB will continue offering options with partitions.
In addition to flexible design options, the government is committed to keeping BTO flats affordable. Over 80% of first-time families can manage HDB mortgage payments with their Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions alone, with little or no cash required. Starting in June, eligible couples can also benefit from a reduced initial down payment of 2.5% under the Staggered Downpayment Scheme.
The Kallang-Whampoa project is part of a broader strategy to create vibrant HDB neighborhoods in prime locations, including the Greater Southern Waterfront and Bukit Timah Turf City. Minister Lee also highlighted Singapore’s commitment to sustainable living, from transitioning to electric vehicles to raising land levels for flood prevention as part of climate resilience initiatives.
These open-concept flats offer homeowners the freedom to design and adjust their living spaces, ensuring a truly personalized home experience.
