SINGAPORE – A recent study by professors from the NUS Business School has shed light on a potential link between Singapore’s Build-to-Order (BTO) flat system and rising divorce rates, suggesting that the lengthy waiting periods and financial strain tied to BTO flats may contribute to marital stress. According to data collected from 1996 to 2011, the study indicates that young couples often feel pressured to marry early to secure a flat, which can place a burden on their finances and relationship.

One of the study’s findings is that the five-year minimum occupation period (MOP) required for BTO flats may encourage couples to “make it work” until they can sell, adding pressure to stay together for financial reasons rather than compatibility. Additionally, overspending and debt accumulation associated with securing and maintaining a BTO flat were highlighted as contributing factors to relationship strain.

In online discussions, Singaporeans have shared personal experiences and opinions about the impact of the BTO process on relationships. One user reflected on a past marriage, stating that purchasing a BTO with an ex-partner became a financial regret after their divorce. “Besides my marriage, buying a house with my ex was my biggest regret,” she noted, explaining that her ex viewed it primarily as an investment and sold the flat as soon as the MOP was completed.

Another commenter observed that financial stability plays a significant role in partner selection. “After getting my finances in order, I’m much more discerning about my choice of partner. Dating in your 30s, free from arbitrary deadlines, is quite liberating,” she said.

The BTO system, some suggest, may pressure young people to rush into marriage before they feel ready and push older couples to delay starting families due to long waiting times. One user advised careful consideration before committing to a BTO flat, remarking that the system can sometimes influence couples’ decisions in ways that don’t necessarily align with their relationship goals.

The discussion underscores a broader debate in Singapore over how housing policies influence lifestyle choices and financial well-being, with many voicing the need for a balance that supports stable, healthy relationships.
