A 44-year-old man, Lim Min Lee, was found dead with severe burns outside his Potong Pasir flat early in the morning on Aug. 28, at approximately 6:45 a.m. Details have since emerged regarding the circumstances leading to the incident.
Lim, a freelancer, had reportedly spent the night drinking with friends. According to his 46-year-old elder brother, a friend brought Lim home and attempted to get him inside by knocking on the door around 6 a.m., but after no response and complaints from neighbors, the friend left Lim outside.
Reports indicate the fire may have started when Lim attempted to light a cigarette, leading to an accident. Initial findings also suggest a short circuit from an electronic device he had on him may have sparked the flames after he inadvertently urinated on himself, causing him to lose consciousness. The device, possibly an e-cigarette or battery, ignited, with the worst burns found near his pants pocket.
A neighbor, alerted by groaning sounds, discovered Lim on fire and quickly extinguished the flames before contacting authorities. Lim’s cousin, asleep inside the unit, learned of the tragic event upon the police’s arrival.
Lim, who was single, had moved into the Potong Pasir residence with his aunt and cousin one to two years ago. His family, including his 80-year-old mother, is devastated by the news.
