A recent survey by answers.sg has ignited a debate over what constitutes a “liveable” salary in Singapore, with over 37% of respondents stating that a monthly income of $9,000 is necessary to get by in the city-state. The findings have drawn mixed reactions, with some questioning whether the figure reflects a realistic cost of living or if it suggests an affluent lifestyle.

According to a report by Mustshare News, the survey highlighted the growing concern among Singaporeans about the country’s high living costs. With inflation steadily rising, many are pondering the amount required to live comfortably. The survey presented respondents with several options for a “liveable” monthly salary, ranging from $3,000 to $3,999 to “Above $9,000.”

Out of 5,185 participants, 34% chose a salary range of $3,000 to $3,999 as being sufficient for a liveable income, while 28% opted for above $9,000. Despite the survey’s data, some online commenters expressed doubt about the practicality of earning $9,000 to survive, suggesting this would cater more to a luxury lifestyle than basic livability.

Several users on Mustshare News’ Facebook page raised concerns about the financial strain on the “sandwich generation,” those balancing the financial care of their children and elderly parents. Some expressed that $9,000 seemed excessive, with one user suggesting that the figure would imply eating at high-end restaurants or relying on taxis rather than public transport.

However, other commenters disagreed, asserting that living in an HDB flat and using the MRT could make $3,000 a month more than sufficient. “A salary of $9,000 is for luxury living, not survival,” one wrote, further questioning whether this figure reflected a realistic lifestyle for most Singaporeans.

Despite these differing opinions, the survey clearly highlights the growing anxiety surrounding Singapore’s escalating cost of living and the varying expectations of what constitutes a sustainable income in the country.
