“As discussions about job security grow among working-age Singaporeans, one student’s candid confession has drawn attention online. Unlike experienced professionals navigating career changes, he openly shared his deep fear of unemployment, writing, “I’m genuinely scared of being jobless.”
Posting on an online forum on Wednesday (March 26), he expressed concerns that his apprehension is widely shared. Now in his third year of diploma studies, he is struggling to decide on his academic path. Torn between Communications at NUS and English Literature with Art History at NTU, he admitted that while he dreams of becoming an art curator, Singapore’s small arts scene leaves him uncertain. “I love it, but I worry that choosing this career might leave me regretting it later,” he wrote.
His worries are compounded by a difficult family situation. Describing his parents as narcissistic and financially controlling, he longs for independence but fears that the current job market offers little security. “Everywhere seems tough right now. I really need some advice because this has been weighing on me,” he shared.
In response, Singaporeans offered words of encouragement and practical guidance. Some shared personal experiences with the courses he is considering, while others reassured him that opportunities do exist. One commenter advised, “Focus on your studies and pursue your passion. There are curatorial roles here, and degrees in Communications or Literature can also lead to teaching or other fields. Humanities may even gain value in an AI-driven world. Trust that things will work out.””
