SINGAPORE – A 36-year-old Bangladeshi construction worker tragically lost his life after falling 10 meters through a skylight at a Tuas worksite on October 22, 2023. The incident happened while he was installing solar panels on a workshop rooftop. Images shared on social media show paramedics attending to him immediately after the fall.
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) confirmed that the accident occurred around 2 pm at 12 Tuas South Street 2. Despite being rushed to the National University Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. The site is operated by Energetix Pte. Ltd., with BBG Electrical Engineering Pte. Ltd. being his employer. MOM has since halted all work-at-height activities at the site and is conducting an investigation, emphasizing the importance of proper fall prevention systems.
The Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) announced that the worker’s remains will be repatriated to Bangladesh. While awaiting compensation through the Work Injury Compensation Act (WICA), MWC will offer an ex-gratia payment to support his family and provide counseling to colleagues who witnessed the incident. MWC’s 24-hour helpline is available for workers needing support at 6536 2692.
This incident marks the 21st reported workplace fatality this year, following another recent fatality involving a Bangladeshi worker at a BTO site in Sembawang.
