The crackdown on sugar continues in Singapore. By the end of 2023, Nutri-Grade labelling requirements will extend to freshly prepared beverages for sale in Singapore, including popular drinks like bubble tea, smoothies, and freshly brewed coffee.
Previously, Nutri-Grade labels were only required on pre-packaged drinks, classifying beverages from A (healthiest) to D (least healthy) based on sugar and saturated fat content. Beverages rated C and D must carry the Nutri-Grade label, and those rated D are prohibited from being advertised on any media platform.
Now, this labelling system will be applied to freshly prepared beverages, with menus, signs, and online listings required to display the Nutri-Grade labels. This includes drinks like bubble tea, freshly squeezed juices, and herbal drinks. Drink sellers may be motivated to switch to healthier recipes to avoid a low Nutri-Grade score.
The initiative is part of the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) effort to reduce sugar consumption in Singapore, as freshly prepared drinks are a significant source of sugar in local diets. While smaller businesses will receive initial concessions on this policy, such as those earning under S$1 million annually, the MOH and Health Promotion Board (HPB) will review and adjust the regulations over time.
