SINGAPORE – A Bukit Panjang family’s ordeal with a “neighbor from hell” has escalated, with incidents ranging from urine poured into shoes to soy sauce sprayed on laundry. Despite mediation, the family reports that the harassment has continued unabated.
One family member, who prefers to be called Nur, shared her family’s experience with Mothership. Although she no longer lives in the family home, her parents and siblings still face frequent disruptions from their elderly neighbor, who lives alone on the same floor.
Recurring Incidents
On May 11, 2023, the woman allegedly trespassed into the family’s home, confronting Nur’s mother in a heated exchange. Weeks later, the family’s corridor was stained with paint, which Nur suspects the neighbor spilled, as a trail led back to her door. June and August brought more incidents, with the family’s laundry being doused in soy sauce. On September 7, CCTV footage captured the woman pouring dirty water on the family’s shoes.
The harassment even includes intimidation tactics. In early September, the neighbor stood outside their door, staring directly into the CCTV camera. Days later, she installed her own camera facing the family’s entrance, prompting them to cover her window with newspaper.
Ongoing Police Investigations
The family has lodged multiple police reports and sought intervention from the town council, which confirmed the ongoing investigations. Despite repeated police visits, the woman often refuses to answer the door, leaving the family to face repeated incidents.
In response, the Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council encourages residents facing similar issues to seek mediation through official channels like the Community Mediation Centre (CMC) or the Community Dispute Resolution Tribunal (CDRT).
Nur’s family has been dealing with this neighbor since 2021, labeling her behavior as relentless and “borderline terrorizing.” The incidents began when the family placed a shoe rack outside their unit, which the woman claimed infringed on her territory. Since then, their property has been tampered with, flower pots destroyed, and rubbish placed outside their door.
