In Singapore, there is a unique bus service that operates for public transport on just seven occasions each year. Bus service 405 runs from Boon Lay Interchange to Choa Chu Kang and Lim Chu Kang, specifically designed to transport commuters to cemeteries and columbariums.
Details about this infrequent service were shared on May 13 as part of the Singapore HeritageFest, allowing pre-registered members of the public to experience the ride in conjunction with SBS Transit’s 50th anniversary.
The bus operates on significant occasions: Qing Ming, Good Friday, the first day of Ramadan, Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji, Deepavali, and All Souls’ Day. During these days, the public can use this service to visit the resting places of their loved ones and pay their respects.
Unique Regulations
According to 8world News, due to the remote nature of the roads the bus travels, only young male bus captains are permitted to drive this service for safety reasons. Additionally, the bus operates exclusively during daylight hours.
The first bus departs Boon Lay Bus Interchange at 7 am, while the last bus leaves at 5 pm. The route takes commuters through Jurong West, Jalan Bahar, and Old Choa Chu Kang Road, ultimately reaching Lim Chu Kang Road, where the cemeteries are located, before looping back.
The bus also makes stops at significant locations such as Jalan Bahar Power Station, the Civil Defence Academy, and the Nirvana Memorial Garden. Interestingly, some bus stops along this route appear to have been constructed specifically for service 405, with no other routes listed at these stops.
As a result of its destinations, this bus service is often referred to as the “worship bus.” Bus captains are required to take a test drive to familiarize themselves with the route prior to their shifts, as reported by 8world News.
