Another member of the public has voiced frustration over rising food prices, after noticing a 25% price increase at a noodle stall in Sembawang.
“Qiu Lian Ban Mee at Sembawang MRT NTUC Foodfare increased its price from S$4.80 to S$6.00,” a concerned individual posted on the Complaint Singapore Facebook group on Wednesday (Sept 14). “This is not inflation; this is a rip-off!” the post exclaimed, highlighting the “whopping” price hike.
The original poster pointed out that customers could walk less than 500 meters to a nearby coffeeshop where ban mian is sold for just S$4.00.
One Facebook user, Eric Chew, responded to the post by saying that recent food price increases are “too much.” He speculated that businesses are trying to recoup losses incurred during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Another user, Joel Lam, was even more direct, calling food vendors “daylight bloodsuckers.” He added, “Inflation? It’s too much. The government should step in.”
Some wondered whether recent increases in rental prices might be driving the cost hike. Facebook user Jiaxiang Ang explained that prices at NTUC Foodfare stalls are controlled by management and that any price increase has to be reviewed. “We need to understand that due to high inflation, everything has gone up in price,” he added.
This isn’t the first time customers have complained about rising food costs. From extra charges for takeaway containers to S$11 cai png, many netizens are voicing concerns about how “crazy” prices have become. Some suggested that cooking at home may now be the more affordable option.
