A GrabFood rider recently found himself facing a hefty fine after parking his motorcycle illegally while making a delivery at Sky Vue condominium in Bishan. The incident, which occurred on Dec 20, has sparked a discussion about following rules and the challenges faced by delivery riders.

In a letter sent to residents on Dec 27, Sky Vue’s strata residential manager, Tng Leong Wai, explained the circumstances leading to the fine. According to Tng, there was no heavy rain when the delivery rider entered the condo at 6:45 pm. Despite being instructed by security to park in the authorised parking area, the rider parked his motorcycle near the level one letterbox area, an unauthorised zone that obstructed pedestrian traffic and posed a safety risk to nearby children.

After a concerned resident alerted the guardhouse, security clamped the motorcycle. The rider, upon returning, argued with the guard but ultimately paid the $200 administrative fee.

The rider shared his frustration on Facebook on Dec 22, stating that it had been raining heavily, and he parked his motorbike illegally to quickly complete the delivery. His bike was clamped just two minutes later, resulting in a fine of $214. He urged fellow delivery riders to follow security instructions, regardless of the weather, lamenting that “a day of my earnings” was gone.

The post sparked mixed reactions online. Some netizens felt that the rider deserved the fine for disregarding the rules and parking in a way that inconvenienced others. Others empathised with the rider, suggesting that the punishment seemed harsh given the circumstances, as he was only parked for a short time and was working in the rain.

AsiaOne has reached out to Grab and the Sky Vue condo management for comments.

This incident comes after another delivery rider took to social media last month to express frustration over receiving only a $2 tip after delivering food all day in the rain. While some sympathised, many pointed out that tipping is not an obligation, and the reward for the work is the delivery fee itself.
