SINGAPORE: The demand for premarital health screenings has surged by an impressive 30%, attributed to the trend of men and women choosing to delay marriage until later in life.

Interviews conducted by Channel 8 news with various family clinics revealed that nearly half of the couples seeking medical examinations are over the age of 30, with some even in their 40s. The growth in premarital medical examination services has been significant, with an overall year-on-year increase of 30% and a 20% rise in customers opting for comprehensive premarital packages.

These comprehensive packages typically include routine physical exams, tests for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and fertility health assessments. One clinic offers screenings for conditions such as thalassemia, syphilis, hepatitis B, and HIV/AIDS as part of its services.

Most clients seeking these screenings are aged between 28 and 37, usually initiating their medical examinations about a year before registering for marriage to promptly address any potential health concerns.

Doctors interviewed noted that many couples have benefitted from early detection of health conditions through these screenings, enabling them to take proactive measures in preparing for their future together.

The screenings range in cost from $100 to $500 and include a thorough review of family medical history, focusing on chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure.

In addition to testing, clinics also provide comprehensive health management advice, including guidance on preparing for pregnancy, recommendations for vitamins, strategies for quitting smoking and drinking, and tips for maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen.

For male clients, the screenings can include a detailed assessment of sperm quantity, quality, and motility, while female clients may opt for blood tests and ultrasounds to evaluate ovulation and natural conception potential.

The primary motivation behind couples seeking premarital screenings is to enhance their chances of conception. If any abnormalities are detected, couples are typically referred to obstetricians or urologists for further evaluation and treatment.

As more individuals choose to wait longer to marry, the demand for premarital medical examination services is expected to continue rising, reflecting a growing awareness among couples about the importance of proactive health management and responsible family planning.
