SINGAPORE: A foreign domestic helper has taken to social media to reveal the dire conditions she endured while working for her employer, including frequent hunger and inadequate food provisions.

In response to a related post, the helper described her experience of being treated poorly and not receiving enough meals. She explained that she had to purchase her own food and rice because her employer had allocated only 1kg of rice for her and the six family members in the household.

“How she treats me. My food is not enough. I buy my own rice because she wants her 1kg to last a month for seven people eating. I can’t even eat eggs,” the maid wrote, expressing her frustration. She further mentioned that all family members were very calculative, buying food solely for themselves and excluding her from meals.

In her desperate situation, the maid resorted to eating scraps left uneaten on her employer’s plate. “Sometimes I eat food my previous employer left on her plate because I have no food. But she has no heart… I’ve stayed in this situation for 15 months,” the helper shared.

She noted that on particularly busy Saturdays, she often lacked time to eat at all. “I’ve never complained. I get Sundays off to buy my own food with my own money. I pray that she finds a helper with the strength to confront her about this behavior, not someone like me,” the maid added.

During her days off, the helper attended the Centre for Domestic Employees (CDE) for support. However, when her employer discovered this, she purchased a flight ticket for the helper and sent her back home, fearing that the maid had complained about her treatment.
