Jay Chou held the Singapore stop of his Carnival World Tour on Dec. 17 and 18, 2022, at the National Stadium. This was the Taiwanese singer’s first concert in Singapore since January 2020—almost three years ago. However, many fans left disappointed.

Post-concert, several took to social media, including Chou’s Instagram page, to express dissatisfaction over the quality of his vocals, the use of guest performers they found uninteresting, and how little Chou himself sang. Some also reported that their light sticks didn’t work, which further dampened the mood.

Flooded with Comments Chou posted on Instagram after each night’s performance, sharing how “high” the atmosphere was and thanking his Singaporean fans. However, the responses were not entirely favorable:

“Big brother, that few friends of yours shouldn’t be on stage. It was really embarrassing. We spent good money to hear you sing, not your guests.”

“If your heart isn’t in it, don’t do a concert. Doing it just for the money—can your conscience take it?”

“Can I get a refund? Even half would do, really.”

One commenter summed up the sentiment, writing: “With singing like that, I might as well go home and listen to the CD. It’s a concert I regret attending the most.”

Fans Lament Concert Experience Many expressed frustration over technical issues, including faulty light sticks, which disrupted the experience. Some noted that Chou didn’t sing much, with guest performers taking up too much stage time.

“Lots of complaints on Xiaohongshu… saying you didn’t sing much, and it’s the same old problem—the audio was louder than your voice.”

Some even compared Chou to other performers like JJ Lin and Jacky Cheung, pointing out that those artists spent more time performing themselves.

Supportive Fans Despite the criticism, some fans were more understanding. One fan who interrupted a work trip in Bangkok to attend the concert admitted feeling slightly disappointed but pledged continued support for Chou.

Another fan defended the singer’s age (43) and stated that fans shouldn’t expect him to perform as he did 20 years ago. They felt Chou had tried his best and called for more reasonable expectations.

One emotional fan said he cried during the concert, thanking Chou for being a part of his youth and treasuring the memory forever.

The concert sparked mixed reactions, with some feeling let down and others standing by their idol, regardless of the shortcomings.
