SINGAPORE: The father of a teenage girl is seeking compensation and answers from authorities after his 19-year-old daughter, Huang Jia Min, broke her ankle near a construction site adjacent to a Yishun bus stop. The accident has left her needing surgery and facing a five-month recovery period, derailing her plans to attend her polytechnic graduation and pursue university applications.

The incident occurred on Feb. 21 around 11 a.m., as Jia Min was walking past a temporary bus stop at Yishun Central, near Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. She stepped into a 20 cm-wide gap by accident, and in an attempt to steady herself, felt severe pain in her leg, resulting in a broken ankle.

Passersby quickly helped Jia Min, and she was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where doctors informed her that surgery involving screws and iron plates would be necessary to help her walk again. Jia Min noted that there were no warning signs at the site when the accident occurred, but when her father visited the location a day later, he found freshly painted yellow warning strips and railings, with the gap filled in.

Mr. Huang expressed frustration, stating that the accident could have been avoided had these safety measures been implemented sooner. He is now seeking compensation and highlighted that the outcome could have been even worse had it involved an elderly person.

In response, a spokesperson from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) confirmed they are aware of the incident and have since taken steps to address the safety issues at the site. The LTA stated they have implemented safety measures such as ramps, barricades, and cones, and have offered assistance to Jia Min and her family.
