SINGAPORE — A Filipino expat, living in Singapore for ten years, recently sparked a conversation on social media when she shared that her family’s monthly living expenses amount to over $11,000. Posting on TikTok on Jan 15, the expat, who goes by @gieziheart, broke down her costs for her family of three, excluding shopping.

Her budget includes the following:

Rent: $4000
Utilities & WiFi: $350
Transportation allowance: $900
Tuition fees (son): $900
Son’s extra activities: $800
Helper: $1100
Dining out & activities: $1600
Toiletries: $500
Groceries: $1500
Total: $11,650

“PS Shopping not included,” she added in the video.

The TikTok video attracted significant attention, with some commenters asking for more details about her living arrangements, including her rental cost. Ms. Gieziheart clarified that her family lives in a condo in Tanjong Pagar, though she acknowledged that her rent recently increased to $6,000, prompting her to consider moving.

However, some viewers accused the TikToker of flaunting her lifestyle. One commenter advised her to remain humble, while another criticized the trend of “Filipinos bragging about how much they spend in Singapore.”

In response to the negative feedback, the expat posted a follow-up video on Jan 17, addressing the accusations of showing off. She emphasized that her intention was not to brag but to share positivity and inspiration. “Luxury & sophistication is for everyone,” she wrote in the caption. “If a minority like me can do this, so can you, whatever it is you wanna achieve.”
