A Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officer has made history by becoming the first woman to complete the challenging 65-day SAF Ranger course. Captain Yap Hui Jun, now the first female graduate of this elite program, was celebrated in a LinkedIn post by Chief of Army Major-General David Neo on October 17, 2023. “It’s a great day to be a Ranger! Immensely proud,” he wrote, applauding her achievement.
Yap, whose badges also identify her as a trained reconnaissance officer, joins the ranks of Rangers after completing what is considered one of the SAF’s toughest courses. Conducted annually at Pasir Ris Camp since 1978, the course emphasizes intense combat leadership and small-unit tactics, with limited slots available for non-commando regulars.
To complete the course, trainees undergo grueling tasks including a static line parachute jump, rappelling exercises, a 20-kilometer combat march, and a full field exercise with a casualty evacuation. Graduates must also master live firing and boat training, all designed to push physical and mental endurance to the limit.
Captain Yap’s historic achievement marks a milestone for SAF and an inspiration for future generations.
