SINGAPORE – Former President Halimah Yacob delivered the opening address at the Middle East Institute’s annual conference on June 25, where she discussed Singapore’s ties with the Gulf States, the essential role of women in national development, and the importance of education. Halimah emphasized that political will is crucial for enacting policies that advance women’s roles in society.
Reflecting on Singapore’s progress, Halimah noted that women’s contributions have been pivotal, particularly as half of Singapore’s university graduates and a third of its science and technology professionals are women. While Singapore has made strides, she believes further progress is needed to see more women in leadership roles. Halimah pointed to the Women’s Charter and recent policy advancements in Singapore, which prioritize women’s equal opportunities and protection.
Halimah also highlighted the Gulf States’ efforts to improve education and increase women’s workforce participation. Though female workforce participation in the Gulf remains below the global average, Halimah emphasized that fostering women’s involvement is crucial for national growth.
Addressing the prolonged conflict in Gaza, Halimah called for an immediate ceasefire and genuine peace talks. She urged Gulf States to play an active role in peacebuilding, leveraging their resources to contribute to a sustainable resolution.
