SINGAPORE: In a remarkable journey that spanned over four and a half months, a group of four men, including a father-son duo Tom and Alfred Waring, and cameraman Anton Delli-Bovi, traveled from London to Singapore in two Land Rover Defenders. Joining them for most of the trip was their friend Asifur Chowdhury, who accompanied the group through 20 of the 23 countries on their 24,000 km expedition.

Departing from London on August 6, the crew drove across Europe, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia, finally arriving in Singapore on December 16. The adventure’s primary purpose was to raise over S$200,000 in funds for various charities, including Singapore-based SAZZ, an initiative founded by Chowdhury that supports underprivileged families and migrant workers.

The journey was inspired by the historic 1955 London-to-Singapore road trip by six university students, although the team adapted their route for safety reasons, avoiding countries like Russia and Iran. As they traversed diverse landscapes, each destination offered its unique charm—from the mountainous roads of Kyrgyzstan to the rugged off-road trails in Kazakhstan.

While the team faced challenges, including a car accident in Tibet, they managed to reach Singapore in high spirits. Reflecting on the journey, Alfred Waring said the charity aspect made the adventure especially meaningful. The funds raised will support organizations across four countries, ensuring a lasting impact from their journey.

In a statement that summed up the entire trip, Tom Waring shared, “This wasn’t just a holiday. It was about making a difference.”
