SINGAPORE: As more young Americans express interest in living abroad, a recent survey highlights Singapore as the fifth most desirable destination among Gen Z respondents, ahead of popular choices like Germany, Italy, and Australia. Conducted by the online language learning platform Preply, the survey reflects a growing trend of younger U.S. citizens seeking new cultural experiences, economic opportunities, and improved quality of life overseas.

Singapore ranks just behind the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and the Netherlands in Gen Z’s top choices. According to Preply, Singapore’s strong economy, modern infrastructure, and vibrant expat communities contribute to its appeal. The ease of travel to other Asian destinations and the city-state’s status as a business and finance hub further strengthen its desirability for young Americans.

Rounding out the top ten in the survey are Australia, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and Ireland, with New Zealand, South Korea, and the Philippines also making the top 20. The study revealed that key motivators for Gen Z to move abroad include better social programs like universal healthcare, a lower cost of living, and dissatisfaction with the political climate in the U.S. Additionally, 59% cited concerns over gun violence as a factor in their decision to consider moving.

For Americans eyeing Singapore, however, the transition comes with considerations. U.S. citizens need either a work visa, study visa, or family reunification visa to stay long-term, and Singapore’s high living costs require financial planning. While the U.S. also has high-cost cities, Singapore’s overall cost of living remains one of the highest globally, underscoring the need for prospective expats to prepare.
