“Singapore’s national water agency, PUB, has issued a flood risk alert for Jalan Seaview and Mountbatten Road, advising commuters to avoid these areas due to potential flash floods. The warning was released at approximately 2:45 pm on 19 March 2025 and remains in effect for an hour.
Earlier in the day, PUB also cautioned residents about widespread heavy rain across multiple regions of Singapore. The Meteorological Service Singapore had previously announced on 17 March that a monsoon surge, driven by strong north-easterly winds over the South China Sea, would bring gusty conditions and cooler temperatures between 19 and 21 March. This is the third monsoon surge of the year, with minimum temperatures expected to drop to around 22°C.
While the surge provides a temporary cooling effect, the intense downpours may lead to flash floods by overwhelming drainage systems, PUB warned. Residents are encouraged to stay updated via the PUB Flood Alerts Telegram channel and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
Jalan Seaview, a low-lying area affected by tidal conditions, has experienced flooding before, including an incident on 10 January this year during a similar monsoon surge. Although PUB upgraded roadside drains in 2014 to improve water flow, some sections remain vulnerable due to their proximity to high tide levels.
To mitigate future flooding risks, the government is investing in drainage improvement projects, some of which are set to begin this year. In the long term, Singapore’s plans to develop Long Island aim to provide further protection against rising sea levels and tidal flooding, safeguarding areas like Jalan Seaview and the broader East Coast region.”
