A resident in Bedok North found himself in a rather unusual predicament when a large monitor lizard took up residence outside his flat on Wednesday morning (May 24). The incident was reported by Stomp contributor Jiten at 11:45 am, who described the reptile as “huge” and stated it had been lounging outside his HDB home for about 30 minutes.

“We are awaiting NParks to come rescue us,” Jiten said, expressing concern about the unexpected visitor that had settled near the entrance of his home on the third storey of Block 428 Bedok North Road.

Photographs shared by Jiten depicted the monitor lizard hanging around someone’s door, raising alarms among residents in the vicinity.

By the afternoon, Jiten provided an update, confirming that a team from the National Parks Board (NParks) had arrived to address the situation. “They used a bag and some tools to capture the monitor lizard; there were about four of them,” he reported, assuring fellow residents that Block 428 was now free of the reptilian presence.

Stomp has reached out to NParks for further information on the incident.

If you ever encounter a monitor lizard, NParks advises the following:

Remain calm, as these creatures are generally shy and will not attack unless provoked or cornered.
Avoid touching, chasing, or cornering them, as they may react defensively. Observing from a distance is recommended.
In the rare event of a bite, seek medical attention promptly. While monitor lizards do secrete venom, it is typically not fatal to humans, but there is a risk of bacterial infection from the bite.
