SINGAPORE: In a Facebook post on May 21, Madam Ho Ching, chairperson of Temasek Trust and wife of Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, highlighted the importance of welcoming international talent to Singapore’s schools and workforce. She commented in response to an article on the backlash over plans to open a Malaysian university’s medical program to all Malaysians, encouraging a more inclusive approach in Singapore.

“We shouldn’t be afraid of having the best and brightest join our schools and universities,” Mdm Ho said. Comparing it to athletes training overseas to compete on the world stage, she emphasized that healthy competition helps elevate standards. Singapore’s openness to foreign talent, she added, is crucial for maintaining a “hunger and competitive edge,” especially in today’s knowledge-based economy.

Mdm Ho’s views echo those of other leaders who stress the value of foreign expertise in boosting Singapore’s long-term economic resilience. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong recently warned that discouraging foreign talent could deter investments, impacting Singapore’s global attractiveness and, ultimately, its citizens.
