SINGAPORE – Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong stated on July 6 that the government and the People’s Action Party (PAP) will not hide any issues, even if they may be embarrassing or damaging. This statement comes in light of Transport Minister S. Iswaran assisting with an investigation by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB).
DPM Wong affirmed that both he and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong are dedicated to maintaining the public’s trust in the government. The CPIB’s recent announcement indicated that it is investigating matters related to Iswaran.
The investigation began after the CPIB updated PM Lee in May about an unrelated case and identified the need to interview Iswaran. Following PM Lee’s approval, formal investigations commenced on July 11.
While acknowledging public concern, DPM Wong urged patience as the investigation proceeds, assuring that the CPIB will conduct a thorough and independent inquiry.
In light of the ongoing investigation, PM Lee has asked Iswaran to take a leave of absence from his ministerial and Member of Parliament duties. Senior Minister of State Chee Hong Tat will act as Minister for Transport during this time.
DPM Wong contrasted this investigation with the previous Ridout Road case, stating that the current probe was initiated by the CPIB without any public complaints, emphasizing the proactive measures taken to uphold integrity.
