“A coffee shop in Jalan Besar has been providing free breakfast sets for students since November 2024, yet not a single student has taken up the offer.

The initiative, which is limited to 10 sets per day, requires students to simply show up in their uniforms to receive a meal. The offer includes two slices of toasted bread with butter and kaya, two half-boiled eggs, and a hot drink.

Crystal, the manager of the coffee shop, shared with Mothership that the goal was to ensure students start their day with a proper meal before heading to school. Despite the lack of response, she has no plans to discontinue the initiative anytime soon.

In addition to this offer, the coffee shop hosts several stalls providing budget-friendly meals throughout the day. Crystal also pointed out that many neighbourhoods have families with lower incomes, and similar initiatives have been carried out elsewhere, such as Kou Wei’s efforts at 531 Bedok Eating House since 2018.”
