SINGAPORE – The trial of People’s Voice leader Lim Tean was set to begin on Monday, Dec 11, but has been postponed again after Lim was diagnosed with gastroenteritis. Lim’s defense lawyer, Mr. Foo Ho Chew, presented a medical certificate to the court confirming his client’s illness. This marks the second postponement of the trial.
Initially scheduled for Aug 29, the trial was delayed when Lim requested an adjournment to hire new counsel and review evidence due to his involvement in the Presidential Election as the seconder for candidate Tan Kin Lian, former CEO of NTUC Income.
Lim, 58, faces three charges under the Legal Profession Act for practicing law without a valid certificate, which he denies. Additionally, he faces four other charges, including unlawful stalking and criminal breach of trust involving alleged misappropriation of a client’s funds.
In court, Deputy Public Prosecutor Edwin Soh characterized Lim’s actions as a “delay tactic,” pointing out that the trial date had been fixed since a March pre-trial conference. Mr. Foo explained that Lim began feeling unwell on Dec 8 and saw a doctor on Dec 10, but Foo only received the medical certificate the following Monday.
The trial has now been rescheduled for Dec 27.
