A woman was left shocked and distressed after returning from a family holiday to find her Filipino maid had disappeared, taking $500 in cash from her home and leaving behind a threatening letter from loan sharks.
Zhang, a 40-year-old bank employee, hired Giselle, her maid, in July of this year. However, a month later, she discovered that Giselle had borrowed $500 from loan sharks. “She was doing well at work,” Zhang explained to Shin Min Daily News, “but when I checked her phone’s chat history in August, I found out she had taken money from loan sharks.” Zhang also discovered that Giselle had shared her personal information with the lenders.
In response, Zhang reportedly took Giselle to the police station to report the incident, warning her not to repeat such actions. Despite this, in December, Zhang and her family were away on holiday in Japan when she became concerned after noticing a lack of activity on her home’s CCTV cameras.
Upon reviewing the footage, Zhang saw that her 39-year-old maid had left the house the day before, carrying a small bag. When Zhang returned from her holiday, she found that $500 had gone missing, along with a note from a loan shark demanding a further $2,000.
Zhang contacted the police, who informed her that Giselle had likely returned to the Philippines. “We found the loan shark’s letter in the mailbox,” Zhang said, explaining that the note revealed Giselle owed the money. “Now that she’s gone, the loan sharks have been harassing and threatening me.”
Despite her need for domestic help, Zhang said the ordeal had made her reluctant to hire another maid in the future. “I’m now hesitant to trust someone else,” she admitted, reflecting her frustration and sense of betrayal.
The police are continuing to investigate the case, according to Shin Min Daily News.
