The Malaysian Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) has announced that it is acceptable for Muslims to wish Christians a “Merry Christmas,” provided the greeting is intended solely to promote goodwill and social harmony. This statement, issued on December 22, clarifies that the wish must be irreligious, with no intention to endorse or acknowledge the beliefs of another faith. Additionally, the greeting should not involve the use of religious symbols or emblems.

JAKIM’s guidance draws on the views of the Federal Territories Mufti’s Office, which states that such wishes are permissible as a means to maintain positive social relationships and ease tensions between communities.

However, JAKIM also urged the public to consult religious authorities before organising or participating in religious celebrations of other faiths. The department issued further recommendations on December 20, advising Muslims to avoid engaging in religious activities that contradict their beliefs or the Shariah.

Moreover, JAKIM emphasised that non-Muslim events should not conflict with the cultural and moral values of the Muslim community in Malaysia, nor should they cause any offence to Muslim sensitivities. Organisers of such events are encouraged to seek approval from religious authorities to ensure compliance with these guidelines.
