SINGAPORE — A 39-year-old Filipino man pleaded guilty on January 15 in Singapore to one count of attempted rape after attempting to assault a female friend following a night out with his girlfriend and the victim’s boyfriend. The accused, who knew the victim and others from their time in the Philippines, now awaits sentencing, scheduled for January 18.

According to court records, the group had gathered at the 1-Altitude bar, consuming significant amounts of alcohol. When the bar closed, both women were heavily intoxicated, with the men helping them reach the taxi stand. The group initially boarded a ride-sharing vehicle, but the journey was interrupted when the victim vomited, and they had to alight.

The accused then accompanied the victim in a separate taxi, leaving his girlfriend and the victim’s boyfriend behind. During the ride, he reportedly groped the victim, who was semi-conscious. Upon arriving at his residence, he assisted the victim to his girlfriend’s bed, where he again molested her. Attempting further assault, he was ultimately unsuccessful as the victim resisted by crossing her legs.

Following the incident, the victim confided in friends and sought counseling for resulting trauma, including nightmares and panic attacks. She reported the assault to the police in May 2019, shortly after beginning counseling.

The prosecution has requested a sentence of five years in jail and six strokes of the cane, emphasizing the trust violation and emotional impact on the victim. The defense requested a lighter sentence, arguing that the incident was not premeditated.

If convicted, the accused faces up to 20 years in prison, along with potential fines or caning.
