A Marymount resident took to the Singapore Raw subreddit to express her frustration after encountering a series of disrespectful comments from MP Gan Siow Huang’s helpers, who repeatedly referred to her as “a maid” despite her being a local resident.
In her post, user u/DreamMausoleum recounted the incident, which occurred around 8:40 PM on July 4th while she was having dinner. She noticed someone loitering outside her corridor and grew cautious. A male grassroots leader approached her door and inquired if her “sir” was home. Confused, she asked, “Who?” to which he shockingly responded by asking if she was the maid. Taken aback, she clarified that she was not, only for him to repeat, “You not a maid ah?”
Shortly after this encounter, two more grassroots leaders arrived—a male and a female. The female leader remarked, “Oh, the maid eating ah?” prompting the resident to reiterate that she was not a maid. Despite her clarifications, the derogatory comments persisted. As the group, including MP Gan Siow Huang, passed her unit, she overheard them refer to her again as “the maid eating.”
The resident expressed her disappointment, questioning the caliber of individuals being elected as representatives. “Is this the type of people we’re electing for? Are those the kind of people fit to be an example to others?” she lamented.
Her mother, who arrived shortly after, confronted the group about the remarks. They denied any such comments had been made, but the resident claimed to have evidence of their statements.
The post has since garnered significant attention, sparking discussions about the behavior of grassroots leaders and the appropriateness of having helpers announce the arrival of the MP. Many commenters urged the resident to formally report the issue to Ms. Gan, expressing concern over the lack of professionalism exhibited by her team.
