In a step towards reducing electronic waste and addressing environmental needs, Microsoft has opened a new Circular Center in Singapore.

Microsoft’s Circular Centers focus on repurposing decommissioned cloud computing hardware from data centers, giving it a second life in schools, job training programs, and other applications. The initiative aims to reuse 90% of Microsoft’s cloud hardware assets by 2025.

The Singapore Circular Center is the first of its kind in Asia, marking a significant milestone for the company’s environmental goals while providing local employment opportunities.

Through advanced technology like the Intelligent Disposition and Routing System (IDARS), Microsoft applies AI and machine learning to create zero-waste solutions for outdated hardware. This technology helps efficiently repurpose or recycle components, optimizing their reuse in various industries, from education to gaming.

The Circular Center initiative is reshaping the sustainability efforts within Microsoft’s data centers. By collaborating with partners, Microsoft ensures end-of-life hardware parts are creatively repurposed, such as donating servers to schools and repurposing memory cards for electronic toys.

In Southeast Asia, where many countries are accelerating their net zero efforts, the Microsoft Circular Center in Singapore aligns with the region’s environmental goals. Singapore’s robust recycling infrastructure makes it a strategic location for the Center, which is expected to help cut carbon emissions and create green job opportunities.

Microsoft’s first Circular Center opened in Amsterdam in 2020, achieving significant environmental impact, and new centers are planned in Washington, Chicago, Sydney, and other global locations. These centers continue to drive Microsoft’s broader commitment to net zero by 2050, reflecting its ongoing partnership with communities and industries across Asia and beyond.
