Hougang SMC has long been a stronghold for the Workers’ Party (WP), represented over the years by MPs like Low Thia Khiang and the current MP, Dennis Tan. However, the People’s Action Party (PAP) has introduced a new player in the area, appointing Jackson Lam as the new branch chairman of the PAP Hougang division.
Lam, an assistant director at the National Trades Union Congress, assumed the position on October 17, replacing Lee Hong Chuang, who previously contested Hougang SMC in the last two general elections, securing 42% of votes in 2015 and 38% in 2020. Lee will continue in a supportive role as branch advisor, stating, “I look forward to working closely with Jackson and the rest of the activists to represent PAP and serve Hougang residents.”
A business management graduate from the University of Bedfordshire, Lam has been actively involved in PAP, serving as branch secretary for Nee Soon GRC and as treasurer of the Singapore Wushu Dragon & Lion Dance Federation. He wasted no time in his new role, joining Minister Desmond Lee and former PAP chairman Lim Boon Heng for a walkabout in Hougang, engaging with residents and reinforcing PAP’s presence.
Meanwhile, the WP has maintained its engagement, conducting a recent walkabout led by party chief Pritam Singh and former MPs Low and Png Eng Huat, distributing their newsletter and meeting with residents.
