SINGAPORE: The National Library Board (NLB) is set to transform how Singaporeans interact with literature by rolling out new artificial intelligence (AI) services aimed at enriching the public’s library experience. Leading this initiative is ChatBook, an AI chatbot that allows users to access information about books through interactive conversation.

The versatile ChatBook is designed with two versions: a comprehensive online tool ideal for students and researchers and a simpler WhatsApp version for general readers. The online version provides detailed responses, displays sources, and previews related books, while the WhatsApp version offers brief, accessible information for quick reference.

To further elevate reading, NLB will also launch StoryGen, an AI image generator that creates visuals based on keywords related to book characters, genres, and story themes, available next year in public libraries. Another project, Glue, a dynamic visualization system, will showcase Singapore’s history using real-time images, articles, and public contributions online and in select library and museum spaces. A prototype of Glue will be introduced in early 2024.

In addition, the newly renovated Central Public Library is set to reopen on January 12, marking an exciting year ahead for Singapore’s library-goers. The number of readers engaging with local libraries has grown significantly, with library visits exceeding pre-pandemic levels, highlighting the continued importance of these spaces in Singapore’s knowledge and literacy culture.
