SINGAPORE — A recent video of an overcrowded bus shared on social media has reignited discussion on whether Singapore’s public transportation infrastructure can meet the demands of its growing population. The clip, showing commuters standing due to packed seats on bus 121, follows another video of a crowded MRT station that similarly sparked debates on overpopulation and public transport strain.

Many online users pointed out that Singapore’s infrastructure was originally designed for a population of around four million, yet today it supports nearly six million. “Public transport can barely keep up,” one commenter observed, while another added, “We need better scheduling; even double-deckers are maxed out during morning rush hour.”

Some defended the system, noting that crowded conditions during peak times are typical worldwide. “Singapore still has one of the best transit systems,” wrote a foreign resident. Meanwhile, others suggested better route management, such as increasing buses during high-traffic times.

Adding to the strain, temporary platform closures at Telok Blangah and Harbourfront MRT stations, in place until May 2024 to accommodate Circle Line Stage 6 construction, have increased commuter density at certain stations, raising further concerns over capacity limits during peak hours.
