A TikTok video of People’s Action Party (PAP) Member of Parliament Baey Yam Keng dressing up as a character from the popular Netflix series Squid Game for Halloween has sparked mixed reactions online. While some viewers joined in the fun, others criticized the MP for what they deemed an inappropriate and poorly timed display, given the current economic situation.

The 40-second clip, shared on Facebook on Friday (Oct 22), shows Mr. Baey playfully donning the iconic green tracksuit from Squid Game, drawing both amusement and disapproval from the public.

Some netizens found the costume choice “tasteless” considering the rising financial struggles many are facing. “It’s a bit tasteless judging by the current economic situation,” one user commented. Another added, “Too free, ah… part-time MP.”

Stronger criticisms also emerged, with one commenter urging the MP to prioritize addressing real concerns, saying, “Do something to help Singaporean (lives), lah.” A few users even took a harsher tone, claiming that politicians don’t need Halloween costumes to appear frightening, with one writing, “No need costume, their appearance in public is already scary.”

Additionally, another netizen highlighted the presence of a toy gun in the video, questioning whether it was appropriate for an MP to use such props. “Even if that is a toy gun, there is code and regulation to follow,” they wrote, suggesting that simpler attire would have sufficed.

Screenshots of the reactions continue to circulate, with a growing debate on whether this lighthearted Halloween video was suitable for a public figure, particularly during challenging times.
