SINGAPORE: In his first address as Prime Minister on May 15, Lawrence Wong highlighted the significance of the leadership transition as a “passing of the baton” across generations. Speaking in English, with portions in Malay and Mandarin to honor Singapore’s diverse heritage, Mr. Wong addressed nearly 900 guests, including political leaders, educators, students, and frontline workers. “You embody the rich fabric of our nation,” he told the assembly, expressing his gratitude for their support.

At 51, Mr. Wong is Singapore’s first prime minister born after its independence in 1965. Reflecting on this milestone, he acknowledged the responsibility of his generation to continue the nation’s journey. “We will lead in our own way…think boldly and think far,” he said, committed to building on the foundations laid by his predecessors, including former Prime Ministers Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong. He expressed deep gratitude for his immediate predecessor, Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, commending his selfless dedication over five decades.

Mr. Wong emphasized his commitment to recruiting younger Singaporeans in their 30s and 40s to join his administration, aiming to ensure a government that represents and supports the entire nation. Acknowledging global challenges, he promised to safeguard Singapore’s interests while prioritizing stability in the ASEAN region and fostering relations with major global powers.

Urging all Singaporeans to join him on the path ahead, Mr. Wong pledged to serve with unwavering dedication. “I will make tomorrow better than today,” he said, concluding his address with a call to action: “Let us take SG forward together.”
