SINGAPORE – Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong is set to begin his introductory visits across Southeast Asia with a two-day trip to Brunei and Malaysia, commencing on June 11. This will be PM Wong’s first international trip since taking office on May 15, following a longstanding tradition among Singapore’s leaders to prioritize regional visits.

In Brunei, PM Wong will have an audience with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and his wife, Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, who will host a lunch in his honor. He is also scheduled to meet Crown Prince and Senior Minister Al-Muhtadee Billah and Princess Pengiran Anak Sarah in Bandar Seri Begawan. PM Wong will depart for Kuala Lumpur later that evening, where he is slated to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other high-ranking Malaysian officials.

The trip follows PM Wong’s previous visit to Brunei in December 2023, during which he co-chaired the Ninth Young Leaders’ Programme alongside Crown Prince Billah. This year’s visit holds special significance as Singapore and Brunei commemorate 40 years of diplomatic relations, reinforcing their mutual commitment to deepening ties as ASEAN’s two smallest member nations.

Accompanying PM Wong to Brunei are his wife, Ms. Loo Tze Lui, along with Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu, Minister for National Development Desmond Lee, and Minister of State Rahayu Mahzam. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will act as prime minister in PM Wong’s absence.
