SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has issued his first statement on last week’s deadly attack at a police station in Johor, emphasizing that it serves as a “grim reminder” of the ongoing threat of terrorism. Writing on Facebook on May 21, PM Wong noted that the attack, which occurred just across Singapore’s border, underscores the need for vigilance.
On May 19, a man killed two police officers and injured another at the Ulu Tiram police station before being fatally shot. PM Wong warned that global conflicts, particularly in the Middle East, continue to be exploited by terrorist groups to spread radical rhetoric. He highlighted self-radicalisation as a rising concern, especially among youths, with four young Singaporeans dealt with under the Internal Security Act in the past two years.
Singapore has stepped up security measures, particularly at checkpoints, in response to the heightened threat. PM Wong urged the public to remain alert and report any signs of radicalisation to the Internal Security Department (ISD), stressing that early intervention can help prevent harm to individuals and the public.
