SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong ushered in the New Year with a message of resilience, optimism, and unity, encouraging Singaporeans to embrace 2024 with strength and solidarity. In his New Year’s message, PM Lee looked back on 2023, acknowledging international tensions and domestic challenges, and underscored the importance of remaining united as Singapore heads into an uncertain future.

“Let us face 2024 invigorated and confident, as one united people,” he urged, calling on every Singaporean to support a vision for a bright future together. He also praised Singapore’s commitment to tolerance and respect, especially when handling divisive issues like the Israel-Hamas conflict, noting the country’s carefully nurtured racial and religious harmony.

Reflecting on Singapore’s 1.2% economic growth in 2023, PM Lee acknowledged the high cost of living affecting households and highlighted the Goods and Services Tax (GST) increase to 9% in 2024 as a measure to meet rising healthcare needs. The government will continue the Assurance Package in 2024 to alleviate these impacts.

Looking forward, PM Lee pointed out that Singapore faces a “less favorable” external environment, with ongoing geopolitical tensions in regions like the South China Sea and cross-Strait relations. Climate change and economic transition to a net-zero carbon emissions model present additional challenges, although rapid advancements in AI and robotics offer new avenues for growth.

Singaporeans can look forward to continued support for local businesses, upskilling opportunities, affordable housing, and a transformed healthcare system to cater to an aging population. 2024 is also expected to be the year when Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong assumes PM Lee’s role as Prime Minister. PM Lee called on citizens to support Wong and the fourth-generation leadership team as they work to shape a fair, inclusive, and united Singapore.

“Let us together fulfill our aspirations and build a future that Singaporeans can be proud of,” PM Lee concluded, wishing everyone a Happy New Year.
