SINGAPORE – Prime Minister Lawrence Wong inaugurated seven new stations on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) on June 21, marking the opening of Stage 4 from Tanjong Rhu to Bayshore. This addition, often referred to by locals as the “makan line” due to the abundance of eateries in nearby neighborhoods, enhances access to areas like Joo Chiat, Katong, and East Coast Park.

Residents had the opportunity to preview the new line with free rides and activities from noon to 9 pm on June 21, ahead of the official passenger service launch on June 23. The extension promises a faster, direct route, with travel from Marine Parade to Shenton Way in the CBD taking only 20 minutes—a significant reduction from previous commute times requiring bus and train transfers.

PM Wong, who grew up in Marine Terrace, shared memories of wishing for a closer MRT station during his youth. With more than 10 schools near the new TEL4 stations, students also benefit from the convenience and reduced travel time.

Designed with inclusivity in mind, TEL stations feature large signage fonts, braille, enhanced hearing systems, and additional lifts and entrances, making travel easier for those with special needs.

Looking ahead, the TEL will extend to Changi Airport by the mid-2030s, and the Bedok South and Sungei Bedok stations are slated to open by 2026, delayed due to pandemic-related and construction challenges. PM Wong encouraged residents to remain patient as development continues, stating, “TEL4 is just the latest stop in our journey to build a better home for all Singaporeans.”
