“Fans of Prata Wala will soon have to find a new go-to spot, as the well-known halal-certified chain has announced its closure.
In a heartfelt Facebook post on 18 February, the restaurant expressed gratitude to its loyal customers, stating, “Thank you for being part of our journey at Prata Wala… Serving you has been a true privilege.” No specific reason for the closure was provided.
The announcement came as a shock to many supporters, with one Facebook user calling the news “sad and unexpected.” Another expressed appreciation for the eatery’s popular dishes, particularly its butter chicken and prata.
Uncertainty arose among customers regarding which outlets would be affected. While Prata Wala’s website listed two remaining locations—Jurong Point and Chinatown Point—a Google search indicated that only the Jurong Point branch had been marked as “permanently closed.”
When AsiaOne visited the Chinatown Point outlet, operations continued as usual. The restaurant’s manager confirmed that only the Jurong Point branch, considered the “main brand,” would be shutting down. Meanwhile, the Chinatown Point location, operated under a franchise, will remain open with a new identity.
Aubrey Young, the franchise owner, reassured customers that the Chinatown Point branch would continue serving its signature dishes under the new name “Makan Prata.” She explained that the rebranding aims to retain loyal customers while introducing a fresh identity.
“We don’t want to disappoint our regulars. The menu will remain 90 to 95 per cent the same, with a few new additions,” Young shared.
A poster inside the outlet informed diners about the upcoming transition, stating, “Our brand will be undergoing an exciting change soon! Same great food, same team, but with more variety!”
The rebranding is set to take place next week, ensuring that customers can still enjoy their favourite Indian dishes under the new Makan Prata name.”
